Best Snorkeling Spots
Lighthouse (El Fanar)
★★★★★
Best Overall · Shore Access
The top snorkeling spot in Dahab. Walk off the promenade into a stunning shallow reef teeming with clownfish, parrotfish, angelfish and moray eels. You can snorkel here for free anytime.
Blue Hole Rim
★★★★★
Most Dramatic · Day Trip
Snorkeling the rim of the Blue Hole is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The shallow coral shelf drops away into 130m of deep blue. Excellent coral, dramatic scenery, free for snorkelers.
Eel Garden
★★★★
Beginner-Friendly · Unique
Shallow, calm water over a sandy bottom where hundreds of garden eels sway in the current. Unique and fascinating. Very gentle conditions — ideal for first-timers and families with kids.
Blue Lagoon
★★★
Calm · Family-Friendly
The shallow sheltered lagoon north of Dahab. Very calm and safe, minimal current, easy entry. Good for nervous swimmers. The kitesurfers in the background make for entertaining viewing too.
What to Bring
Reef shoes: Essential. Almost all Dahab snorkeling spots have coral or rock at the water's edge. You can rent them in town for 30–50 EGP.
Reef-safe sunscreen: Regular sunscreen kills coral. Reef-safe options available at local dive shops. Or wear a rash guard instead.
Underwater camera: The Go Pro-style cameras available for rent at most dive centers ($20/day) are worth it — Dahab's reef life is spectacular.
Snorkeling vs Diving
About 70% of Dahab's marine life is visible from the surface. The best coral is typically in the top 0–8 metres, which snorkeling covers. You don't need to dive to have an extraordinary underwater experience here. That said, if you want to see the deeper walls, swim into cave systems, or dive the Blue Hole properly, scuba diving opens up a different world.
