Hurghada and Dahab are both on the Red Sea, but on opposite shores — there's no direct road, and the ferry can't be relied on. Plan a buffer day either way.

This page has the full picture: every transport mode with real 2026 prices, the trade-offs that make each one right for different travellers, the practical pitfalls nobody warns you about until you are halfway across Sinai, and what to do once you arrive in Dahab.

Every option from Hurghada to Dahab, compared

ModeDurationPrice (USD)Notes
Ferry to Sharm + taxi5–6 h$80–120International Fast Ferry from Hurghada → Sharm marina (90 min, when running) + taxi to Dahab. Schedule is unreliable; check the day before.
Drive via Suez8 hFuel ~$50The long way round — Hurghada → Suez → Dahab. Reliable but a full day on the road.
Internal flight + transfer4 h total$140–220HRG → SSH via Cairo (no direct), then taxi to Dahab. Pricey but the only fast option.

Which option is right for you

The decision usually comes down to four variables: how much time you have, how much you are willing to pay, how comfortable you need to be, and how much you trust unfamiliar transport in a new country. Here is how to think about it.

If your priority is speed, choose the fastest mode in the table above. For most origins that means a flight (where available) or a private transfer. The premium over the cheapest option is usually $50–150 — for a 7-day trip this is worth paying; for a 21-day trip it matters less.

If your priority is budget, the bus or shared taxi is always the cheapest. Egyptian bus operators like Go Bus and Blue Bus run modern AC fleets with assigned seating — they are not what most Western travellers picture when they hear "Egyptian bus." Comfortable enough for an overnight, much cheaper than the alternatives.

If you have luggage or kids, the cost difference between a shared taxi and a private transfer collapses fast — a private transfer for 4 people at $140 is often cheaper per person than 4 separate flights or 4 separate taxis.

If you have flexibility on dates, watch flight prices. The Cairo-Sharm route in particular swings from $50 to $200 depending on day-of-week and how far ahead you book. Tuesday and Wednesday flights are usually cheapest.

  • Take the ferry only if it's confirmed running. Otherwise drive.
Local tip: The ferry has been off-and-on for years. Confirm with two operators 24 h before you travel.

What to expect on the journey

Sinai is a security-controlled region. Whatever transport you choose, expect 4–6 passport-and-vehicle checks at fixed checkpoints. Bus passengers and private-transfer customers stay in the vehicle while drivers hand over passports — typical stop is 5–10 minutes, sometimes longer at major checkpoints near Suez Canal and Sharm El Sheikh. Have your passport (not just a copy) accessible.

The route is paved, modern highway with the Red Sea on one side and Sinai mountains on the other. The drive is genuinely scenic. Cellular coverage is patchy in the desert sections — download offline maps and any podcasts/playlists before leaving.

Egyptian roads can feel intense if you are not used to the driving culture. If you booked self-drive, plan to leave the city of origin in early morning to avoid traffic, fill up at the first major fuel station (rather than chasing the cheapest), and follow the locals' lead on lane discipline (which is loose).

Once you arrive in Dahab

Dahab itself is small enough to walk in 20 minutes end-to-end. Most accommodation is on the Mashraba and Lighthouse strips, both directly on the seafront. The town's main social areas are:

  • Mashraba — the central seafront strip, dense with cafés, hostels, dive shops and restaurants. Most first-time visitors stay here.
  • Lighthouse — the original dive area, north of Mashraba. Quieter, more dive-focused, marginally cheaper.
  • Assalah — the residential old village inland from the seafront. The most local feel; popular with long-stay travellers and digital nomads.
  • Eel Garden / north end — boutique guesthouses, yoga retreats, the seafront's most upmarket food (Ena's Table, Pasta Mia).

Return journey from Dahab back to Hurghada

The return runs the same way in reverse. Two practical notes:

  • Book the return the night before for any flight, especially from Sharm El Sheikh. The morning checkpoint between Dahab and Sharm can add 30 minutes; airport security in Sharm is thorough. Allow 4 hours total transit time before an international flight.
  • The Egyptian visa exit is automatic from airports — no separate fee or paperwork. Land border exits (Taba) require both Egyptian and Israeli stamps; allow 1–2 hours at the crossing.

Frequently asked

What's the fastest way from {{ c.name }} to Dahab?
{{ c.durationFastest }}. See the table below for every option, with real 2026 prices, plus the practical context that determines which is right for you.
Is it worth flying from {{ c.name }} to Dahab?
Depends on trip length. For trips under four nights, a flight (where applicable) saves enough time to be worth the extra cost. For longer trips, ground transport is the better value — you arrive less tired, with more cash for the rest of the trip. Where flying is not direct (Dahab has no airport — nearest is Sharm El Sheikh), factor in the SSH-Dahab transfer when comparing total time door-to-door.
Can I do it in a day trip?
Only from Sharm El Sheikh and Eilat. From other origins (Cairo, Hurghada, Tel Aviv) the round trip exceeds 12 hours including border or checkpoint stops, which makes a day trip impractical. Plan at least one overnight in Dahab — most travellers stay 4–7 days once they arrive.
Is the journey safe?
Yes. The Sinai Peninsula has security checkpoints throughout — your passport will be checked 4–6 times en route depending on origin. This is normal and not a sign of trouble. Bus operators and the major taxi services have strong safety records. Drive in daylight where possible, and have your passport (not just a copy) with you.
Do I need a visa to enter Egypt for Dahab?
Most nationalities can buy a visa-on-arrival at Egyptian airports including Sharm El Sheikh and Cairo, for $25 USD cash. Land borders (e.g. Taba from Israel) issue a free Sinai-only stamp valid for 14 days, but you cannot leave the South Sinai region with that — for Cairo or further inland you need the full visa. Always confirm requirements for your nationality before travelling.
